Serving our country is a privilege. Most people, for various reasons, become part of the Armed Forces family, and give their lives to protect and defend our freedom, and our way of life. At the end of their tour, which can last from a couple of years, to twenty, thirty, or even more. After facing many disturbing, mind-blowing events, Veterans want to do something positive with their lives. But after coming back home, and because they spent their entire adult life in the service, most of them cannot relate to, and did not have anything to offer to the society. The ones that go to college, have to face the consequences of the main Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) symptoms: anxiety and depression disorders. This university in particular, supports Veterans, service members, and their families by providing assistance with state or federal education benefits, and finding the resources they need on and off campus. Their mission is: “To ensure success of Veterans in higher education and beyond” (University of Minnesota), and the program aspirations, to me, are perfect for Veterans with PTSD. Their first objective, Teacher, and Faculty Outreach, encourage faculty and staff to raise awareness of Veterans in the classroom. This mission also offers to meet with individual faculty/staff members to help understand how to be supportive to Veterans in the classroom, Campus-Wide Events, and departmental interactions. Veterans trained intensively twenty-four hours a day. Institutions should allow Veterans to apply those hours of experience towards degrees. Most do not apply those hours towards education because will be less credits for the Veteran to graduate.
