The heart is the most important muscular organ in the human anatomy. It is located in the thoracic cavity medial to the lungs and posterior to the sternum. Its function is to pump the deoxygenated blood within the veins to the lungs for oxygen before pumping it to the rest of the body’s organs. Every cell in the body needs oxygen, without the oxygen, the cells will die. The heart works by following a sequence of electrical signals that cause the muscles in each chamber to contract in a specific order. (Taylor, Cohen, 2013, p.250-251)
Blood transmits both nutrients and waste products and is primary to life. The most important nutrients found in the blood are the oxygen. A blood vessel's main purpose is to carry blood around the body. Blood vessels also control the blood pressure. They are found throughout the body and contain five main types of blood vessels that are, arteries, arterioles, capillaries, venules and veins. Veins are the blood vessels that transmit blood back to the heart. They may contain valves that stop blood flowing

Cholesterol plaque in the arteries is usually what causes this disease. When plaque builds up, they shrink the coronary arteries that lead to a decrease in the blood flow to the heart. As the blood flow decreases, this may cause chest pain (angina) or shortness of breath. If the arteries are completely blocked, this may cause a heart attack. This disease can happen to both genders and races, but according to a research, men are at a higher risk of this disease, however as the person gets older, the risk gets higher of damaged and narrowed arteries. CAD has a high risk of being developed through genetics if the parents were diagnosed at an early age. Having high levels of psychological stress may damage some arteries or worsen a damaged artery.
