Avoiding Plagiarism Like the Plague What is plagiarism? Plagiarism is the act of copying one’s ideas and passing them as their own. Plagiarism is a major problem for high school and college students and could be viewed as unprofessional. Plagiarism can easily be avoided by becoming familiar with the topic, use sources responsible, and taking advantage of plagiarism sights. When a student quotes a phrase, or takes the phrase from an article and writes it word for word, it is plagiarism. Plagiarism can also be avoided by finding a website that checks for plagiarism. Planning enough time can help a student develop enough of their own thoughts to where they do not have to plagiarize. Plagiarism can result in a student failing their assignment, or a worker losing their career, or a student being expelled from school. This is a very important reason why a student should take time with their assignments to create original ideas. How can I tell whether I’ve plagiarized? A student or teacher can tell when plagiarism has taken place by direct quotes in quotation marks, or the material that is written sounds differently than what was written in past essays. Rather than typing a source's ideas word for word many students will copy and paste the information into their essay resulting in a different font, hyperlinks, or more than one font. Some information could be outdated form the current which would result in direct plagiarism. Instead of going through all the issues of plagiarizing, a student should take their time to avoid copying and pasting or misleading information. Direct plagiarism can happen because a student does not have the time or will to research information. Plagiarism can be easily avoided by becoming familiar with the topic, take time for the essay, paraphrase the information, and use plagiarism check sights.
