Cars are one of the most beloved creations from the age of the Industrial Revolution. They make getting from one point to another much easier and much more efficient. The very first models, however, were extremely basic in their design and performance. Since their invention in the early twentieth century, countless strides in development have been made to enhance the driving experience. Drum brakes in 1902, the electric starter in 1911, the first power steering system in 1926, flashing turn signals in 1935, airbags in 1970, and the antilock braking system in 1985 are just a few improvements that have been made to cars over the years (Automobile - Timeline). Research has been conducted that proves there are dangers in wearing one. Even in a minor accident, seatbelts can malfunction causing injuries to places like the spine, internal organs, and vascular system. Simple actions like accelerating and decelerating the car can cause the seatbelt to put pressure on the liver and spleen. Injuries from this pressure can range from bruising to the rupture of these organs and damage to the tissue that surrounds them. The shoulder strap can damage the aortas and veins in the neck, and lead to hyperextension and other similar injuries. The shoulder strap can also cause fractures in the sternum and ribs. A study was carried out on thoracic injuries and it was proven that drivers who wore seatbelts were five times more likely to have these injuries than those who did not wear a seatbelt. The lap strap can also be the cause of serious injury. In accidents, the force this strap applies to the hips and pelvis can be enough to break the bones. The lap strap already holds that part of the body in place, so any extra pressure could be devastating to the bones and muscles in the lower body (Smith).
