Nursing is a continuously evolving science. In order to keep up with today’s society, nurses must continue to stay up to date and advance in their skills, knowledge, and patient care routines to obtain successful outcomes. According to Carper, nurses should pursue the development of a holistic, personal, and individualistic treatment regimen. Carper believed that for these changes to be successful, the four patterns of knowing should be implemented into nursing care plans. The four patterns or ways that Carper was referring to consisted of empirics, ethics, esthetics, and personal.…
Theorists like Florence Nightingale made real changes in the world of nursing. Florence devoted her life to the cause of providing clean, compassionate nursing care for the sick. She had brought about worldwide reforms in nursing and hospital administration as well. Sandy’s remarks on Evidence Based Practice helped to appreciate how the world of nursing is continuously changing, and so, for the better. Evidence Based Practice surely helps to achieve…
The Hardy-Weinberg equation is p² + 2pq + q² =1 (Daempfle, 2016). P in the equation equals the proportion of dominant alleles in a population and q equals the proportion of recessive alleles within a population. The homozygous dominant in the equation are given as p². Given this equation and the information from the questions p equal .01 so q would equal .99. The square root of .01 is 0.1.…
Throughout the entire semester, I incorporated evidence based practice into my clinical days. Whether if I was performing a skill or if I was observing my nurse do a skill, I was thinking is this evidence based. I observed nurses use water instead of alcohol to clean an area on the skin before pricking a patient’s finger for a blood glucose check; this I knew was evidenced based. Some none evidence based thing that I observed were using 5/8inch needles when the nurse should have been using a 1inch length or not using two hands when assessing a patient’s fundus. I met my midterm goal of telling the nurse nicely that this is not what we learned in school.…
Imagine walking down the streets of New York City and you notice all the people lining the sidewalk holding boards saying they are homeless. Your parents give you a little money to put in some of their palms. When you stand straight again, you watch, as many people around you look at the homeless people in disgust and try to walk as far away from them as possible. Your dad tells you about the myths about homeless people such as, they are pretending to be homeless, they drink and are lazy, and are sick. In “What Do Fish Have To Do With Anything”, by Avi, a boy named Willie is intrigued by a homeless man in front of his house.…
The goal of practice development is improvement in service, and nursing should identify and promote its own evidence-based practices. These standards of practice must be maintained through self-regulation and professional autonomy. Education is promoted and maintained at the highest standards, and graduates should have the skills and knowledge essential to nursing. The knowledge generated through nursing research is used to develop this evidence-based practice, improve the quality of care and to maximize health outcomes and cost-effectiveness of nursing…
In some parts of the world, nursing is still striving to be considered a profession (Sabatino et al., 2014). Nursing pioneers have defined concepts and established theories and frameworks in order to lay a strong foundation on which our profession can stand. One of these pioneers, Jacqueline Fawcett, knew that in order for the discipline of nursing to advance, nursing knowledge needed to be developed and tested (Fawcett, 1984). After reviewing the literature on nursing theories that had been developed she found that they were all rooted inconsistent concepts. She identified these repeating concepts as person, environment, health, and nursing.…
Value Based Purchasing Summation: Barnett, Schroyer, Schwimer This summation of the benefit of the DNP in Value Based Purchasing is a collaborative evaluation of responses to a Discussion Board posted by Dr. Roxanne Beckham on the University of Southern Indiana NURS 725 Black Board Site 2/13/18. A summation of the comments posted regarding Value Based Purchasing (VBP) is being done and includes; a definition of what VBP is, who oversees VBP, and the role the Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) education plays in VBP collectively. VBP is a transition from fee for services to a service based on outcomes initiatives for patient care improvements.…
When I was working at the hospital, I could see lots of differences between theory and reality. The biggest barrier was heavy workload. Nurses assessed and logically demonstrated proof for conveying quality health care to a certain population by utilizing evidence-based practice (EBP) as a strategy. According to Majid, Foo, Luyt, Zhang, Theng, Chang & Mokhtar (2011), more than 64 of the nurses have been willing to accept EBP. But, they have concern relates heavy workload, it makes nurses cannot follow up to date with new evidence.…
A professional organization handles concerns and issues that may arise for individuals that are practicing in a certain profession. There are many different professional organizations that are available to health care professionals especially nurses. Two of the more common professional nursing organizations in North America today are the National League of Nursing (NLN) and the American Nurses Association (ANA). In this paper, I will share with you what the American Nurses Association is, what goals and activities they perceive, how they meet, support, and advocate the evidenced based practice standards, and lastly I will clarify the concepts of professional nursing. American Nurses Association The ANA is the only full-service professional organization representing the interests of the nation’s 3.1 million registered nurses through its constituent and state nurses, associations, and its organizational affiliates (The Encyclopedia of Elder Care, 2013).…
Now I strive to defend nursing practice with theory and…
Evidence based practice can also be defined by the Nursing Outlook as integrating the best current evidence with clinical expertise and patient/ family preferences and values for delivery of optimal health care. Evidence based practice is a relatively new type of practice. When a student nurse is in the clinical setting they should not rely solely upon what they were taught in the classroom but they should be aware of the current evidence. A student nurse could easily implement evidence based practice by keeping up to date on current and ongoing research, as well as thinking back to other situations that they have observed.…
By the conclusion of this paper, the reader will understand my personal philosophy of nursing. Personal Philosophy of Nursing A nurse’s philosophy involves contemplations of that person’s beliefs, principles, and values within themselves and their practice. The journey to discovering my own personal philosophy began with the answering of questions, such as: “what does nursing mean to me, “and “what guides me in my practice.” To define my personal philosophy of nursing, I will address some of the key concepts of my theory, including the four metaparadigms of nursing.…
Nursing theories developed through different stages and nursing is currently in the integrated knowledge stage, where research based evidences are applied in practice. Nursing theories are numerous and can be classified into various types based…
Theory is central to effective nursing practice and research. Nursing theory offers a framework for thought in which nurses examine situations. This framework supplies structure and organization to nursing knowledge and provides a methodical means of collecting data to interpret, explain, and predict nursing practice (McEwen & Willis, 2014, p. 36). Nursing theory is crucial for the evolution of the nursing discipline. The knowledge that is developed through nursing research is used to test existing theories and to generate new theories and ideas.…
