Avi Selk (2017), author of the article, White classmate avoids jail in coat-hanger assault of disabled black teenager, for the Washington Post on February 26, 2017, reported on an incident in Idaho involving an unnamed, black, disabled, teenage student who was sexually assaulted by three white students while in a high school locker room. One of the white students went to embrace the unnamed victim in a hug while the second took the opportunity to shove a hanger into his rectum, and the third white student kicked the hanger in deeper. In this news report, I will explain how this incident is a part I offense as well as discuss the further victimization this unnamed student faced for being black as well as due to his unfortunate target vulnerability

However, what is a surprise is that the judge, Randy Stoker, was quoted as saying “this is not a rape case”. According to the uniform crime reports (UCR) by the FBI, this case should fall under the part I crime of forcible rape under the new 2012 definition which goes as follows: “the penetration, no matter how slight, of the vagina or anus with any body part or object, or oral penetration by a sex organ of another person, without the consent of the victim” (Siegel 2017:30). The unnamed victim was obviously forcibly raped and for the judge to dismiss this case to simply only child endangerment is atrocious. This article only mentions the punishment of the third assailant, John Howard, who did the kicking during the incident, and it reveals that he basically only got a slap on the wrist and will not be charged for the sex crime he committed. Instead, he’ll be doing community service and be on probation for three years and will not have to register as a sex offender. Howard even has the possibility to have his conviction
