Avery's Home: A Short Story

Improved Essays
Avery pulled her sport-utility vehicle up the long, winding, tree-lined drive towards the house owned by her landlords, Frank and Gladys Prewitt. The brick and masonry, one-story ranch was built about ten years ago. The Prewitts owned a ranch with a hundred acres, and were well known in these parts for raising thoroughbred horses, as well as cattle and other farm animals. Avery’s home is located at the front of their property in the corner nearest town, and she has rented from them for the past six years.
Stepping out of her vehicle onto the gravel, Avery made her way to the porch, pausing briefly to admire the new flowers that were blooming in Mrs. Prewitt’s flower bed. She reached the wooden front door and pressed the doorbell. A few moments

I’d love to.”
The inside of the Prewitt’s house was decorated with lots of antique furniture, obviously collected from the many years that they have been together. There were many pictures on the walls and in frames sitting on the various pieces of furniture, mostly consisting of the pair on various trips, close family members, or of the many prize-winning horses they’ve raised and owned.
Avery made her way inside to the family room where the couch sat near the back door, while Gladys walked back to the kitchen to finish breakfast. She could see Frank’s figure underneath a large crocheted afghan.
As she neared the couch, Avery sensed that something didn’t feel quite right. Frank was known to snore, too and there wasn’t a sound coming from that

I was just dropping off my rent check, but Gladys asked me to help her get Frank up for breakfast. I’m sorry to tell you this, but he’s gone. He must have passed in his sleep. Gladys doesn’t know yet. Can you take care of her while I go outside and call the Sheriff?” Ashley was an ER nurse at the local hospital, and was used to dealing with this sort of thing. However, Avery sensed it would be more difficult considering this was her own family.
“Sure” she replied, visibly shaking and tears welling up in her eyes.
Avery rushed out the front door to her car to retrieve her iPhone. She paused for a few minutes, trying to squash the lump in her throat and calm the shaky nerves before making a phone call to the police to report what she’d just found. Not long after, she could hear Gladys’ wails all the way outside. Once she had contacted the authorities, Avery called the café to let Stacie know she’d probably be late, giving her a quick rundown on what she found.
A little while later, the front porch was full of people gathered around Gladys while she rocked back and forth, still crying. There were a lot of saddened and shocked expressions appearing on every single face. Andy Jones, Ashley’s husband, had gathered the other three ranch employees together in order to show support to and comfort Mrs. Prewitt. This was completely unexpected to

My story happens in a boondocks town in south-eastern rustic Kentucky. It's a residential area that you've probably never become aware of – its residents peppering the mountainsides here and there. It's the sort of town where it isn't precisely remarkable to discover neighbors wheeling and dealing for products with domesticated animals and administrations, living off what the area gives, and by and large making do with what they've got. It was here that my father was raised. It is here that my father raised his gang.…
