Avery's Hallucinations: A Short Story

Superior Essays
Avery woke, pain no higher than normal, but was accompanied by the pressure of bandages, which was abnormal. In all of her accessible memories, she had yet to wake up without pain of some sort, despite medication dulling it when she was younger. She was distracted from her musings when a door opened across the cave like infirmary, admitting a cheerful man who could be heard humming to himself, before registering that he had an audience. He blinked, surprised, before asking, “Are you actually awake or is my sleep deprivation finally produced hallucinations? You’ve only been under for an hour, that drug knocks out grown men for at least eight hours!” After realizing his only patient was awake, he dropped the mug he had been nursing, replacing …show more content…

The carefree girl of earlier was shelved as Mary continued to eat her stew, between explanations.
“It’s said Swordbird mastered forbidden magics, but no one even knows what he looks like, everyone who has been placed on his hit list has not only disappeared, but all of their belongings and family also vanished, as if Swordbird were erasing their very existence,” when Mary caught a flash of emotion on Avery’s face, she misinterpreted it to be fear. Mary’s reassurances that no one had discovered the hideout yet, leaving them perfectly safe were ignored in favor of a single thought running through Avery’s mind.
‘What would these people, these people who are cherished and loved, who are fiercely protective, do if they discovered the truth. My truth. That I am the New Circle’s most deadly weapon,
