Today, the average Canadian Football League (CFL) player makes on average, $80,000 per year. Unlike the average National Football League (NFL) player, who makes an astonishing $1.9 million per year. The two leagues were founded 38 years apart, the NFL in 1920 and the CFL in 1958. Our Northern brothers have many differences between The United States when it comes to sports, and football is one of them. Whether it’s the playing area, the equipment used, or the amount of people of the field at one time; the CFL is unique in its own Canadian way. The CFL has chosen to place their goal posts right in the middle of the goal line, whereas the NFL places them in the back of the end zone. But because of the difference in the end zone length, a CFL kicker is the same distance away as an NFL kicker when attempting to make a field goal. Similarities about the goal posts themselves include: The height of the crossbar from the ground (10 feet), the width of the two posts (18 feet, 6 inches), and if the football goes through the uprights, both leagues give you the same number of points on the board (3). In order to effectively manage that time, both leagues are given “timeouts”, which allow teams to stop the clock at certain time in the game. The NFL gets 3 timeouts per half (30 mins), plus the 2 minute warning, which stops the clock at 2 minutes. The CFL allows for only 2 timeouts per game, making time the real opponent in a game of Canadian football. To add to the difficulty that is clock management in the CFL, teams cannot call a timeout within 3 minutes! This makes potentially game winning drives much more stressful on the offense because they know time is not their friend. One final difference is the playing equipment, specifically the football itself. The CFL’s regulation size football is smaller than the NFL’s football. An NFL regulation size football also has no stripes around its circumference, while the CFL Ball has 2 thick, white stripes on each side of the laces.
