It is sometimes strange that you see a certain issue around you, and suddenly you are given an opportunity to express your view about it and share it with other people. That’s exactly what James Cameron did in his movie Avatar. Cameron saw this movie as an opportunity to exploit the ways in which mankind manipulate and use planet earth for use of their own self-interest and for material things. Before the release of Avatar, critics hinted that Cameron was leading towards a pro-environmental theme in his movie. When asked about what his purpose of the movie was, Cameron answered, "as an artist, I felt a need to say something about what I saw around me" (Lang). With this answer, it is definitely safe to say Cameron is truly an environmentalist. Avatar came about just around the same time when deforestation and global warming theory was becoming a major problem in America. Environmentalism was a controversy issue in American society, and Camron uses Avatar as a way to grab our attention. This movie reflects Cameron view that we all need …show more content…
Cameron wanted the audience to understand that their place of living is worth more than any material thing they could own, because without earth obviously they could not have anything, and destroying our planet to get more of it is senseless. Without saying, it is positive that Cameron uses Avatar to bring about awareness of this tragedy that all humans are contributing to- the destruction of our only planet. Planet Earth needs to be protected and to be seen as sacred before it is gone for good. There is only so much the earth can take before it is completely destroyed. In an interview with The Wrap, Cameron stated that, Avatar is more than a message, it is a feeling, and one that he hopes will make the audience enhanced their connection more with nature

This suggests that some of the actions that environmental activists take are questionable and morally wrong. Take for example Grant Hadwin, a timber prospector who chopped down the Picea sitchensis Aurea tree as an act of protest against the “predatory forestry industry” (259). This act only made a very select group of people feel sympathetic and instead “shocked and disgusted” large groups of people (259). By committing this extremist action Hadwin disregarded environmental virtue ethics and performed an act that did not follow the moral principles of virtue ethics. If Hadwin had studied the teachings of the exemplar environmental virtue ethicists, this act would not have taken place as he would have realized that his act was damaging instead of helping.…

The article, American Forest Policy-Global Ethical Tradeoffs, addresses the issue of global increases in timber demand, especially within the United States, coupled with the decrease in timber production and forest cultivation within the U.S., and the potential solutions that may remedy the growing timber dilemma. The authors propose several solutions and discuss their potential benefits and costs, but overall, voice their preference of establishing forest plantations and practicing intensive forest management. The article is written is a very straightforward, factual way that is aimed at the general public, in an attempt to have them understand the unintentional hypocrisies of their actions of advocating reduced logging while still importing…

One thing Heschel said of prophets is “While others are intoxicated with the here and now, the prophet has a vision of an end” (11). Recently, Dicaprio helped produce and also starred in a documentary called Before the Flood. One thing particularly striking that was said in this documentary was “When I have children, everything that we now all take for granted, our planet, and all its biodiversity and beauty, everything in the future is gonna be different” (Dicaprio, Before the Flood). Rather than thinking about the here and now, Leonardo is thinking about the next generations and how different the world will be if the people living here now do not do something to change it. Another example of Dicaprio’s thoughts about an end is a statement from a speech he gave on Earth Day.…

Environmental Concerns “Should Environmentalists Continue to Be Alarmists?” When it comes to environmental concerns there is always going to be those that tend to care beyond the call of duty, just enough, or not all. Usually, how information is presented and the timing of when it is announced by an Environmentalist can affect how the overall population reacts to the news. It can change their perception of how much each individual will continue to care or not to care for the environment. If for example an Environmentalist made an announcement that a specific area was running out of fresh drinking water during a really bad drought then I would think everyone would be on board to conserve their water resources.…
