Summary of Case Study Bill is a 34 year old male who is in good health. He likes to work out as well as swim and go scuba diving. Bill began feeling discomfort in his right hip, so he decided to visit the doctor. He was prescribed medicine for his discomfort, but it did very little so he decided to return back to his doctor. He returned with the pain still in his right hip, but also mentioned the pain could now be found in his left hip as well. His doctor decided to draw blood work and send for x-rays and made several realizations. The x-rays showed that there had been a change in Bill's right thigh bone that tipped him off into believinjg Bill was suffering from avascular necrosis. Avascular necrosis is when the blood supply is cut off from a part of a bone and consequentially, the tissue dies. The doctor believes this may have occured because of Bill's scuba diving hobby. Bill mentioned he recalls coming up to fast once while scuba diving which may have caused this case off avascular necrosis.

Lack of blood supply can occur for many different reasons. These reasons can include bone trauma, fat deposits in blood vessels, and some diseases. However, about 25 percent of people who suffer from avascular necrosis do not know why their blood flow has been interrupted. Anyone can become affected by avascular necrosis, but it is most common in adults aged 30 to 60 years old. Because avascular necrosis can occur at such a young age, it may worsen as time progresses. When I decided I wanted to become a physician, I knew I wanted to be an osteopathic physician. Osteopathic physicians focus on the whole body when diagnosing a patient, make personal relationships with their patients, and help many underserved areas. I feel these qualities are what the medical field needs in order to progress and I want to be a part of that progression. After taking many biology and chemistry courses, I know that the body is like a machine; when one part is malfunctioning it can cause other problems to arise throughout the machine. When a patient comes in with one complaint, I think it is important to look at the body like a machine and find out exactly where the problem is stemming from and fix it.…

Frederick S. Southwick (2013), a professor of medicine at the University of Florida, is the author of “Losing My Leg to a Medical Error.” In this article, a man, I will refer to as patient X, had pain in his left calf which initiated him to be admitted to the hospital to have an amputation procedure done above the left knee. Two months after continuous pain he was finally admitted to the hospital to receive an amputation above his left knee. The physician in charge of his case was unsure why blood flow was cut off to his lower left extremity because the patient had never smoked, didn’t have diabetes or low cholesterol and there was no evidence for atherosclerosis, the hardening of arteries. In 1995, the patient had surgery done on his left…

Introduction Perfusion is a very important aspect to the human body. Perfusion is defined as the flow of blood through arteries and capillaries that deliver oxygen and nutrients to the cells and removing cellular waste from the body (Giddens, 2013, p. 148). For us to maintain optimal perfusion, we need are heart to generate sufficient cardiac output. This means transporting the blood through patent blood vessels to supply the tissues throughout the body. Impaired perfusion may occur when the blood supply is reduced or completely interrupted (Giddens, 2013, p. 148).…
