A clear cloudless day-time sky hung over Las Vegas, a bright azure sky, matching the water in the pool as Ava waded away from the steps to splash herself. She spotted a new couple, setting up a portable gazebo just beyond the fenced pool area, as she swam alone in the pool. Something she had never seen anyone in the complex do, before.
She was immediately fascinated by the couple and stationed herself by the side of the pool to watch them. The man opened a camping table and carefully loaded coal briquets into a barbecue, stationed what had once been a bocci ball area. “So, you just move here? Have you met people here?” She prayed they hadn’t heard the rumor mongers, yet.
“No. Actually, you are the very first person I’ve met from here.” Marci’s smile was contagious. She invited Ava to join a them.

The following day, she made a bee-line for Marci as she walked her dog.

As the week progressed, Ava made a point of visiting the new couple, every day. Smiling as Javier Morales leaned back in his chair, talking to her as if he’d known her for years. Telling Ava how he’d met his

Deanna, leggy, beautiful, and daring, came a long way from a rugged childhood and the time of liquor bottles aimed at her mother’s head. So said a Washington Post reporter in 2008, “Councilwoman Deanna Flin is a fresh face and a breath of fresh air in D.C. politics.” In the eyes of her colleagues (boozing old school boys with potty mouths and potbellies), she personified Hillary Clinton, the little engine that would, if she could, overturn the political status quo. “Too big for her britches,” said one, which struck Deanna as funny, but not in the ha-ha-ha way.…

After putting on our bright pink leotards and ballet shoes, which trust me we're not the most fashionable, we went out to the car to wait on Dianna’s mom. I should mention it was still raining as if the earth would flood outside, this made it slightly hard to hear but we ran out to the car anyway. Me, Dianna, and Dalton bolted through the door, sprinting to the car that Dianna had unlocked with the small remote. The cold rain made the humid, hot day not feel as bad as the rest of that summer had been, which was dry and hot. When we got into the car we sat for a bit but then Dianna decided she wanted to turn on the music so she jumps to the front seat of the car.…

Loops of pool noodles swirling around electrical wires in a swimming pool. Anxiety has been surrounding me for as long as I can remember. When I'm having a panic attack, 100 Kilowatts (that's 83334 potato batteries) are all firing through the water as the noodles pulse and burst under the stress, an array of neon foams shaking in unhappy waters. When I am having one of these panic attacks, there is only so much I can process of my outside world; I am stripped of the capacity to take in what's around me. Consequently, I cannot effectively communicate during an attack.…
