There, nestled in the Everglades, lies a little slice of heaven. Bursting with bright flowers, rustling ornamental grasses, and swaying palm trees, families relish the natural beauty. In this close-knit town, the parks, 18-hole golf course, and downtown are always alive with activity as neighbors gather. Residents enjoy the lush, green grass before admiring the lurking alligators in the lagoon-blue bodies of water. While it appears this community is a technicolor paradise, it’s carefully constructed and maintained by an expertly trained crew.

The Tuscan columns sustain the full weight of the portico’s pediment. Full-length wooden floorboards make up the remaining area of the porch, which flanks the stylobate.…

John Fante’s masterpiece, Ask the Dust, exquisitely describes the city of Los Angeles during the early 1900s. Very seemingly, there is a strange parallel between modern day Florida and early 1900s Los Angeles. There are many ways that the two places are similar, such as the people who inhabit them, the climate, and how they are characterized and viewed as places of paradise. Los Angeles seems to be thought of as a sunny paradise, where dreams could come true and where the old could die peacefully, feeling like they had to accomplished everything in life. It was a fantasy and so many people fell for that fantasy.…

The Cape Schanck House is like a box kite flying high above Bass Strait, twisting around its long axis as it dives into the top of the dunes. The Medhurst House is a glazed pavilion floating in Miesian serenity above serried rows of vines. In contrast to these ancient earthbound types, the Cape Schanck and Medhurst houses are based on a typology that defies architectural tradition and history. Rather than grounded, they appear airborne. The Cape Schanck House is a black elongated rectilinear tube of space that resembles a giant box kite landing on the dunes.…

Introduction Succession is referred to as changes within an ecological community following a disturbance of a relatively large area (Connell and Slatyer 1977.) Succession is broken down into two main time periods: primary and secondary. Primary succession is classified as the formation of soil and colonization of annual plants over a depleted land. Secondary succession is classified as the colonization and development of perennial plants over an established ecosystem. The process at which succession occurs is so well studied that we can determine what stage of succession an ecosystem is at based on the type of plants present.…

On a rocky hill that is difficult to access, on the banks of the River Darro, protected by mountains and surrounded by woods, among the oldest quarters in the city, the Alhambra rises up like an imposing castle with reddish tones in its ramparts that prevent the outside world from seeing the delicate beauty they enclose. It was originally constructed as a small fortress in 889. After years of neglect, the Moorish king of Grenada renovated it in the 11th century. The fortress was to later be converted into a royal palace in the 1333 by Yusuf I, Sultan of Granada.…
