In the beginning, AutoZone’s strategic push was through mergers and acquisitions. Chief Auto Parts was acquired in 1997 and shortly after Adap’s Auto Place stores were acquired (Parnell, 2014). Autozone shifted their strategic focus to internal growth in the early 2000’s and still emphasizes on internal growth today.
In 2014, AutoZone purchased Interamerican Motor Corporation (IMC) which was the second-largest distributor of import replacement parts in the United States (“AutoZone buys auto parts”, 2014). With European and Asian cars being IMC’s specialty, CEO Bill Rhodes believes that both retail and commercial customers will benefit and value will be increased for the stockholders and customers of AutoZone.
