Autopilot is a sad short story that tell us how a slight change in routine can lead to a huge extremes. Though this story takes things to extreme measures, that I thought to be unlikely, it remains plausible and believable. A phone is placed on charger instead of in your bag like normal and then it is forgotten. Your phone is forgot because your mind is now running on its routine and in your routine your phone is in your bag. What about a child? You forgot to drop your child off at daycare. Your mind is in your routine and in your routine your child is already there. It doesn't register that you forgot something until a moment occurs that makes you remember. What if that moment doesn't come until it's too late?
Things are easy to forget, I forget things all the time. If my pen is not already in my bag I won't think to grab one because my mind is running on its routine and in my routine my pen is in my bag. In this story a parent forgets their child in the car while they are at work. The child dies during the day from being in a hot car without any air, food or water for 9 hours. It shows us how easy it is to forget something like a phone because we were in a routine and in our routine our phone is in our bag. Forgetting to do something we were meant to. Sure for most people forgetting our phone is more likely than a child but we still forget things. If it so easy to forget a phone or a pen why wouldn't it be possible to forget a child.
