One of the benefits of autonomous cars is the ability to save lives. While the regularity of crashes has been declining in the United States, these incidents remain a major public health issue. There were more than 5.3 million automobile accidents in the United States in 2011, resulting in more than 2.2 million injuries and 32,000 deaths. Autonomous car machinery can drastically reduce the regularity of crashes. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety estimated that if all cars had forward collision and lane departure warning systems, blind spot assist, and adaptive headlights, nearly a third of crashes and deaths could have been prevented.
