Automotive Work Case Study

Improved Essays
Automotive stores are mainly a place you would expect to see males working at. Not many times would you expect to see a woman on the job. I work at Oreilly's Auto Parts where I met a woman whose name was Melissa Nash Lawrence. Meeting her was an interesting part of my work experience learning new things about her and the job as a whole. Working with her I noticed some flaws of the job towards her being a woman working in this industry. That's when I notice that being a woman on the job seems to have its cons. Ms. Melissa Nash Lawrence is an African American woman that works in the same automotive store as I and is the assistant store, manager. Ms. Melissa is forty-two years old, who looks younger than she is. She has the skin tone of a Hershey's …show more content…
It was at a time where she needed money dearly to be able to support her soon to be born son. Starting off she knew little about the parts of a car and had no clue how to work on them. Over couple months of beginning her work, she learned about the different parts of a car, but still to this day, she has no idea of how to fix a car hands-on. Being a woman on this type of job, there were plenty of times where customers seemed to be sexist. There was a time on the job where they had a customer who approached her in need of assistance about a certain car part, and the customer asked her if there was a man on duty he could speak to instead of her. She said there were plenty of times when this has happened, but every time she didn't pay it any mind. She said to me, "Customers come in thinking that I have no knowledge about auto parts when I actually have more knowledge about them than they possibly do." That tells you that customers judged her by being a female. There was a time when on the job I witnessed a customer being sexist to her. The man entered the store approaching the counter where Ms. Lawrence was standing. He spoke to her, and then as I approached the counter he immediately approached me saying "hey you should know exactly what I need", leaving Ms. Lawrence looking in …show more content…
Lawrence had on the job was men constantly flirting with her. This its self was the most annoying part of the job to her. She claims that every day there was a new guy flirting with her. I've also experienced this happening to her while at work. A male customer was getting rung up for some parts he was buying and looked over at Ms. Melissa with a Grinch smirk on his face. He then told her how beautiful she was. She gave him a quick reply of thank you in a rather ungrateful tone. I found it funny and let out a silent laugh. I asked her how it felt with all these men flirting with her constantly, and she responded saying "sometimes I just want to curse out some of these men because it is the same men that come in here every day and try to flirt with me." There is a quite an obvious reason to why these men always flirt with her. Ms. Melissa is a rather nice looking woman. Even with the plain baggy green button down work shirt, and the black dickie work pants, she still seemed to get plenty of attention from the men that came in the

The author of this article, Sam Polk, talks about sexism against women in not only in wall-street but in the workforce overall. Polk started off really strong by pointing out how men degrade and objectify women as soon as they’re out of earshot. He also picked on how negatively women are affected by these so called ‘bro-talks’; they either quit their job or sue the company. He also briefly explained the mental effects of ‘bro talks’ not only on women but also men. He explained that men tend to look down on women at work because if you are so used to ridiculing something/…

Sexism in the workplace has been a topic of discussion amongst people for quite some time, seeing as women are more often than not treated under different circumstances and standards than their male colleagues. It is an unfortunate fact that women are often seen as inferior to their male counterparts which in turn, leads to the questioning of their ability to function in certain environments and perform certain tasks. For example, the authority of women is often challenged and they are not given the same respect as men. This issue is presented in numerous work environments, including college campuses, in which the issue is a serious one. In the short story, “Horseman” by Richard Russo, the protagonist, a female college professor names Janet…

I personally believed that the way the author expressed her story through this essay allowed the audience to understand how females in a work position feel, and she allowed herself to be vulnerable enough to create a picture of how she felt that no matter what she was truly capable of her co-workers would always see her as less, which allowed her to write about this type of discrimination she had to endure. My personal feeling on the subject in whole of Ullman’s paper greatly raised a question of how men treat the young ladies, but also how these females are allow them to treat us in this particular why.…

How would you like it if you knew that you were being treated unjustly? No one likes to be treated unjustly. No matter what your race may be or what gender you are; everyone should be treated fairly. For the world to have a moral society, people have to treat each other fairly, regardless of their biases. When people base their opinions on one aspect of a person, they begin to judge them and look down on them, and no one enjoys being looked down upon.…

    Essay On Sexism

In our society today, there are still many techniques of discrimination that one would think had been eradicated years ago. One of these techniques is sexism, which is the act of prejudice, stereotyping, and/or intolerance on the basis of gender. Sexism has taken control over the way people think and it affects the job industry, government decisions, the media, and unfortunately, education. Children begin to experience sexism at a young age, typically in elementary school. An example of a subliminal sexist message that they might experience would be a teacher scolding a female student for acting in an unorthodox fashion that does not fit the ‘calm, respectful, and neat’ stereotype for girls, but then excusing the same actions of a male student, using the overused, disgusting statement ‘boys will be boys.’…

There are many issues I feel deserve the spot light when the topic "Issues of today" comes up, however, the issue I will speak about during this time comes from a personal level. It's about the sexism in the car sales industry, and the psychological impact it has on both men and women. From time to time, I often find myself thinking whether or not the business is worth it, because of the amount of stress I go through everyday, however, beggers can't be choosers, that is why I stay. Everyday I see our managers (all men) give our female-salesmen higher expectations, lower income, and split their deals into "half deals" with the male-salesman (half-deals are when a salesman gives another their customer, because they are either busy with another…

As an employee or an employer, discrimination in the workplace is a difficult issue to deal with, it can be complicated and misunderstood. The legal and ethical issues involved can be arduous, and extensive but is imperative to the work force. For many years I worked as a the only female in a construction supply company, but it was only recently did I personally experience the ethical and legal issue of discrimination. For 13 years I worked for a small privately owned construction supply company, in July of 2012 the owner of the company decided to retire and sell the company to a large corporation based out of North Carolina.…
