I am John Manayam, 25 years old was born in Los Angeles, CA from Filipino parents. When I was almost a year old, for whatever reasons my mom and me had to return to the Philippines. Philippines is a small country that has a lot of mountainous islands covered in tropical rain forest and volcanic in origin. It is there where I grew up and raised for 20 years. Growing up in the Philippines made me accustomed to Filipino language, tradition and values. Life in the Philippines, being a third world country was rough and it wasn’t easy. We lived in one of the remote island where modern amenities and technology lag behind for an example, No AC, No internet, no cellphone, no cable, no microwave, and I could go on and on. These things might sound horrible …show more content…
I went back to California where I had my first job as a Sales Associate at Target. But I it wasn’t the job that I wanted to do for a long time. Ever Since I was a kid I’ve always wanted to join the Air Force and so I did. I joined January 2012 as a Weapons Troop who load bombs and missiles. Got put on my first duty station at Kadena AB in Okinawa Japan. On my first year over there, I married my wife Cherry and have two loving dogs named Daiki and Lola. And on January 21st of this year, my wife gave birth to a baby boy my son, named Chleonne. Me and my wife love Okinawa because it was the place that we called home for 3 years. Love the people, culture, the island and especially the food even though I don’t eat Shushi. Ramen and Coco’s Japanese curry were our favorite. It was really good and we even missing it. We actually fell in love with it right away I ate Ramen at least once every week and curry so many times I couldn’t even count! And while I was there, I was able to travel because of the mission that I supported. I’ve been to Mainland Japan, Alaska, Guam and Singapore. It was such a lovely tour. I hated it when I got the news that I was getting moved here at Hill AFB UT because leaving and saying goodbye to a place that you got so attached into and loved was hard and I am more homesick of Okinawa than the Philippines. And then the big move happened. We moved here in Utah July of this year and got a house on base and trying to make the most out of it here. Around this time on being in the Airforce, three and a half years with hard work and dedication, I got lucky and earned a line number for SSgt. In less than four years in service, but for me I am still miles away from my goal. My goal is to earn my degree and someday go commission and be an officer in the Airforce, serve 20 years and after the military life become a gym instructor to motivate people teach them how to be fit eat

Written by Taiaiake Alfred, “Wasase: Indigenous Pathways of Action and Freedom” expresses his perspective on the “warrior’s dance” of a non-violent spiritual revolution to free his people from colonial oppression. The author explores a history of war and corruption, reasons for rebellion, and approaches that will lead to a successful battle in favor of the indigenous people. Based on his presentation of both facts and opinions throughout his book, I believe he was able to capture and present the overall topic of discussion relatively well. Although his personal background as a Native person implicates a bias of judgment, it also serves as a good foundation of proof based on experience that he effectively incorporates in the book.…
