My autobiography could easily turn into the most banal, quintessential story of the “small town, big dreams” variety— so I try to steer clear of that, but I will make no such promises. Though, small town summarizes Crossville pretty well, or it did at some point. It has since sprung up to quite a busy place, at least for Tennessee, but the Crossville I grew up in was like the typical small town from some sort of movie from the eighties. It was all gossip about who was marrying who and who had stopped going to church and who had started going to church and who had gotten who pregnant— not to mention that everyone knew everyone. My parents, Abby and Patrick, had been married for several years and had already had my sister, Morgan, when I came along. At the time, my mom was a real-estate agent and my dad owned his own construction company. They are both two of the hardest working people I know, and they both love me and my sister unconditionally, which makes it quite hard for me to ever stay upset with them. Speaking of my sister, we have to talk about her for a minute: Morgan was born just about three years before me, and though we have never had the closest relationship, I know that I have practically hero-worshipped her since I could toddle. She is one of the most intelligent people I know, and her humor never fades— even if it is at my expense— and she has gone through more than most people at her age. We used to fight like there was no tomorrow, but I also know that there is very little that I would not do for her; she is a total pain sometimes, but to me, she has always been one of the best people in the
