Autobiographies From The Powerless Research Paper

Improved Essays
Despite the fact that it will make some uncomfortable, it is important to read sources from the powerless and oppressed because it gives those who voices were suppressed a chance to describe the events from their side and gives another point of view from a rather one sided period in time. The use of autobiographies from the oppressed and powerless helps us in being able to identify and understand the experiences of others, helps us become more culturally aware and also helps keep records of our history.

A literacy of struggle offers a place in which those who have struggled can have a voice. Gerald Vizenor, an Anishinaabe scholar and writer, in his book Survivance: Narratives of Native Presence, writes of survivance stories which encompasses the idea of a literacy of struggle is a “heritable right of succession or reversion of an estate and, in the course of international declaration of human rights, is a narrative estate of native survivance” and that “survivance is an active resistance and repudiation of dominance, obtrusive themes of tragedy, nihilism, and victimry” (11). An example of a piece of writing that fits into a long legacy of a literacy of struggle is from Joy Harjo: “This poetry made roots from the…

I couldn't agree more, sometimes I think to myself as well if I have any repressed memories that impact my personality. I never used to be so compulsive or expressive, but I think that has to do with a defense mechanism of mine. I know I have some repressed memories that have molded my personality to be more defensive at times, although I don't like that myself, I do feel it is a defense mechanism to be guarded for protection. I honestly did the same thing with the denial mechanism with my best friend during high school. I was in denial because of my friends passing just wasn't acceptable, and when people approached or confronted me, I pretended as though he was on a long vacation.…

The pain began slowly, pricking me with its sharp needles only while doing barre in ballet once a week. I ignored it, believing it to be normal, common discomfort that would soon go away, typical thoughts of a dancer whose entire sport is centered around “good pain”. Six months later, it had escalated to the degree that every step I took felt like an arrow to my knee. Dancing had become impossible, and it was determined that I should be taken to the orthopedist. The bland, brown and beige lobby became extraordinarily familiar as I waited two hours to be examined.…

Despite the change in time and the advances made in society, there has always been a social ladder, which creates a social divide between those with power, and those without. In the Communist Manifesto, Karl Marx and Friedrich Engel gives a modern context of the social divide, by explaining the relationship between the bourgeoisie and the proletariat. Defined as the group at the top of the social ladder, the bourgeoisie is viewed as the oppressor who exploits and abuse the working class who compose of the bottom of the social ladder, the proletariats. Adding on to this is Vincent Parillo's “Causes of Prejudice”, where Parrillo discusses the relation of the oppressed and the oppressor through genocide, and how the oppressed are victims of discrimination…
