With my internship placement, I have been associated with working with autistic students and participating in weekly peer to peer groups. Over the past year, I began to realize that I am passionate working with this population. Within the school district, there is an Autism team that works with testing, eligibility and treatment plans for autistic students. The team consists of a variety of multidisciplinary professions, including social work.

In elementary school, I participated in my school's Best Buddies program, where students spent one day a week hanging out with students with special needs. My time at Best Buddies quickly became my favorite part of each week. Throughout middle school, I continued my involvement in special education by spending time at Ready, Set, Ride!, a horse ranch with adaptive equipment designed to enable children with special needs to mount and ride horses. This program inspired my desire to be involved in special education programs. For the past two years, I have continued to fulfill my passion for special education by planning and attending monthly socials for adults with special needs, hosted by the Western Dupage Special Recreational Association (WDSRA).…

I have been blessed with many different opportunities in my life to experience diversity through my school, church, and work. Being a part of a church has taught me to always have open arms to anyone that may be different than myself, with that being said my church has introduced me to many different people from all different walks of life. My church also has a large congregation of the Asian culture. Through the many social events of my church I have learned a lot about the Asian culture between their family values, foods, clothing, and gender relations. Working hand and hand with them to serve others has taught me about the differences between our ways of life, but most of all has shown me the similarities between us.…

The incredibly rewarding experience of working beside children that were in my position from years ago gave me the idea to pursue a career in elementary education. From volunteering at an Israeli day care for underprivileged children to an internship assisting a preschool classroom, helping others has always been extremely important to me. I hope to continue this journey throughout my college experience and beyond. When people ask about my autism today, I no longer blush and try to shy away from the topic.…

I believe all of the assignments in the course of the class had importance in building knowledge and understanding of autism spectrum disorders, but, for me, the parent interview assignment was very impactful. Additionally, not only was the assignment very beneficial, but the parent interview assignment also correlated to Council for Exceptional Children (CEC) Standard 1:1, which discusses how the understanding of a student’s language, culture, and family background influences the learning of individuals with special needs. I also believe the interview assignment correlated to the CEC Standard 6, which discusses the roles and responsibilities of special education professionals. I believe it is crucial, and the responsibility for special education…
