Autistic Career Goal

At my time at Howard University, I had the pleasure to attend a number of Biology and Chemistry courses for my major. In the beginning of my senior year, I registered for Endocrinology as a biology elective. Before the semester started, my teacher assigned a presentation project to prepare for the first week of class. The project had students research their career interest and find any pathology related to endocrine glands and hormones. I have a set goal to graduate from medical school and become a pediatrician. Although pediatrics is very general, it never occurred to me to dig deeper and broaden my career goals. During my research, I will able to gain a large amount of information that was new to me. Although my initial focus was children and adolescents, I broaden my search in pregnant women. The valuable information I received helped me discover a passion that I never knew. The hormonal issues autistic children encounter affects themselves, their family, and society. After this assignment, many doors opened for me to work with autistic children during Christmas break and attend seminars with other doctors and students about pregnancy affecting autistic children. This assignment allowed me to expand my passion to not only children but also pregnant women who may have autistic children. My career shifted from going directly to medical school and becoming a pediatrician to getting my MPH then work toward becoming a pediatric endocrinologist specialist.
