Autism Spectrum Disorders: The Four Stages Of Social Development

Human beings are genetically social, when humans are first born they automatically rely on many people through some form of communication. It has been proven that a child's ability to thrive with others can be it's greatest predictor of adult adaption rather than their intelligence and academic achievements (Hartup 1992). With that being said prosocial and antisocial behaviors can be directly related to different types of social school performance. In a study it showed that kids that were socially adjusted had a greater chance of academic success. In order to achieve these successes they have to be socially developed. Social development is define as a process of learning to attain maturity in a social relationship but can also be alter due to a change in environment or a new developed friendship. A couple steps needed in this learning process is social intelligence and competence. Spectrum meaning huge spread of symptoms and such that are presented within a disorder, this word was added to give a broader sense of autism. Because it is now called ASD other disorders like Asperger syndrome and childhood disintegrative are now apart of this disorder. As you may know there are people with these disorders that can completely operate on there own but like other disorders there are many who can not function on their own.
