Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a neurodevelopmental disorder that can cause significant social, communication and behavioral challenges. The symptoms are present from early childhood and affect daily functioning. In this paper, we will discuss the definition, possible causes, characteristics, intervention techniques, teaching strategies and accommodations, and services available.
Definition of Autism
In 1990, Autism became a separate category under the IDEA. The federal definition of autism is (Hunt & Marshall, p. 301): Autism means a developmental disability significantly affecting verbal and nonverbal communication and social interaction, generally evident before age 3 that adversely affects a child’s educational performance. It was once thought Autism was due to poor parenting (Bee, H. L., p. 211). Another current hypotheses states the neurodevelopmental disorders originated before birth (beginning early in the embryonic stages of development) (Hunt & Marshall, p. 306). Researchers have yet to find a single neurological marker, however a few cases have specified specific genetic defects that have lead to atypical neurological development (Bee, H. L., p. 211).
Although the cause or causes of autism have yet to be found, researchers are continuously focusing on the biological factors and emphasis on risk, early environment and prenatal development (Hunt & Marsh all, p. 307). Characteristics of Autism
Autism is characterized by individuals having difficulty in communication, social interactions and behavior. Symptoms and severity vary widely which might result in mild (high-functioning) to more severe that interferes with everyday living.
Some common behaviors that children with ASD might display are (“Facts About ASDs,” 2016):
• Delayed speech and language skills
• Get upset by minor changes (transition difficulties)
• Not play "pretend" games (pretend to "feed" a doll) by 18 …show more content…
It turns reading into a joyful, shared experience. This book helps through communication through pictures and the text is clear and direct. Children will learn to convey their wants and needs, their experiences and, most importantly, their feelings. The book Some Kids Have Autism has authentic pictures and clear and concise language. This book would assist siblings and peer support to understand what Autism is. The Autism Social Skills Picture Book is great for communication and social skills through communicating through pictures. Having the child and family watch the documentary, Talk to Me, it will assist those that are unfamiliar with an autism
