Introduction In this research paper you will read about children with autism and some of the treatments that have been used to treat symptoms of autism. It appears that depending on the severity of the symptoms there is flexibility to choose which intervention would work best, of course what works for some may not fare well with others, so it is important to get to know the family and allow them to be included in which treatments will work for them. From what I have seen working in the mental health field in the rural community, most intervention for autism are conducted one on one initially and as the child progresses or show improvements they are introduced to group session with peers who have the same diagnosis or similar.
Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD)
Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and autism are both general terms for a group of complex disorders of brain development. Characterizations of the disorders depends on varying degrees, difficulties in social interaction, verbal and nonverbal communication and repetitive behaviors. Intellectual disability, difficulties in motor coordination and attention and physical health issues such as sleep and digestive disturbances are all associated with ASD. In order for an individual to be diagnosed with ASD, he or she must have several qualifications as stated in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-IV).
