Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD)

Human development has always been an interest to society, from how life is formed to the environmental factors that affect the wellbeing. Not so long ago, research on Autism Spectrum Disorder came to light and opened a whole new world of investigation on the speculations of how it originates. This has shifted examiners to provide awareness on the major environmental factors that may cause ASD such as the chemicals one purchases for cleaning, providing knowledge to women whom are pregnant, and creating regulations on the chemicals that are not to be used during pregnancy or around children. Providing awareness on Autism Spectrum Disorder will provide society with knowledge on the cautions humans have to take to live in a healthy safe environment …show more content…
Household cleaning labels tend to fail to provide the information needed to caution the consumer on the harmful effects it will take on their wellbeing. According to the article “Connection Between Prenatal Exposure to Household Toxic Chemicals and Autism?” Goldbas states “There is increasing evidence which indicates the possibility that fetal exposure to toxic environmental chemicals may be one of the many contributing factors implicated in the development of autism” (Golbas 63) One needs to be conscience about their environment and the household chemicals one is using to clean their home. This implies that the developing fetal infant brain is affected by the chemicals that we comfortably use on a daily basis to keep our houses clean. Nowadays we use and are exposed to many chemicals that did not exist before. Children and pregnant women are the most vulnerable and are being exposed to chemicals that are in personal care products, lead and asbestos, cleaning products, the exhaust of motor vehicles, and amongst many more. Our bodies are being affected unconsciously as we live and breathe these harmful chemicals that make up the environment we live …show more content…
We humans are creating more and more hazardous chemicals that are harming our wellbeing and also those of the unborn. “Dioxins cause birth defects, immune system damage and cancer. Dioxins are found in commonly used laundry detergents, liquid soaps, and window cleaners.” (Goldbas 66) Laundry detergents and liquid soaps are frequently used products that are needed for hygiene. The more fragrance the product has, the more toxic and harmful it is to our bodies. “…nothing was found which stated dioxins were not toxic.” (Goldbas 67) The government is not providing enough information to its people on what is hazardous to the body. Even on labels that do provide it, the wording is convoluted and may not be understood by all. Toxic chemicals are recognized as harmful to the developing fetal brain. There has been a connection between environmental chemicals and ASD, especially with pregnant women, who are exposed to or take chemicals during pregnancy. Awareness and prevention can help tomorrow’s future. “…the steps we take to protect our health can prevent prenatal risks from becoming reality.” (Berk and Meyers

Fetuses, babies, and young children have a much smaller body mass than adults, this makes their bodies extremely susceptible to harmful chemical exposure. High exposure to phthalate chemicals in utero can affect growth and development. Because phthalates can cross the placental barrier, fetus exposure is common and directly impacts the male genitalia. Various scientific experiments indicate that high exposure to phthalates at a young age can result in male genital abnormalities. Furthermore, newborns are more likely to receive the highest dosage of DEHP in the population because of their exposure through blood transfusions, extracorporeal membrane oxygenation, and respiratory therapy.…

There is still very limited awareness of the nature of the threat." Toxic pesticides should not be used without knowing the threats that follow.…

The effects of environmental influences are wide-ranging depending on the prevailing environmental factors. A particular stage of development fails to take place normally, especially the critical period when cells multiply and enlarge to form organs. Prenatal development is critical in determining the health and structure of a newborn. For example, exposure to chemicals, radioactive material, and drugs among other hazardous conditions may lead to failure in development of some body parts, stunted growth in babies as well as poor cognitive development. Severe exposure can lead to miscarriage or death during and immediately after birth (Hepper 2005).…
