Like most of the autism scale, there is an overlap in difference between Asperger’s syndrome and high functioning autism. People with Asperger’s have mild symptoms such as little or no eye contact, difficulty with conversations, and literal thinking. Unlike those with Asperger’s, those with HFASD have deficits in verbal abilities, visual-motor coordination and visual-spatial problem solving. The main difference between the two is language development. Individuals with Asperger’s have normal language development, while those with HFASD have a significant language delay. One of similarities is that they tend to have an average or above average intelligence. “Because many individuals with HFASD struggle to understand others’ emotions, they often miss nuances such as eye contact, body language, proximity, or facial expressions. In addition, they may have difficulty with pragmatic language, misinterpret others’ communicative intent, and struggle with responding appropriately, either verbally or nonverbally.” (Tincani) The people who are diagnosed with Asperger’s or high functioning autism can utilize different therapies to assist them with the specific disabilities that they are having. Occupational therapy helps teach the correct form of social interaction, behaviors for specific situations, and how to behave in a classroom. “Breaking down a routine into simple steps and showing those steps with pictures is one strategy for teaching children with ASD a new routine. Many people of all ages with ASD seem to learn better using pictures than with oral or written instructions.” (Rodriguez) In an occupational therapy session a child may work on sensory and fine motor skills. Occupational therapists can help to create calming strategies for overstimulation. They can help teach a child basic life skills such as dressing and cooking.
