What is autism?Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a range of complex neurodevelopment disorders, characterized by social impairments, communication difficulties, and restricted, repetitive, and stereotyped patterns of behavior. In the novel;,The Curious Incident of the dog and the night-time the main character Christopher has autism and the author of the novel does an outstanding job of portraying Christopher as an autistic child.

One aspect of autism that Haddon got both sides correct would be Christopher’s parents. Christopher’s father loves Christopher very much, and by Christopher’s definition “loving someone is helping them when they get into trouble, and looking after them, and telling them the truth, and Father looks after me when

The way Haddon portrayed her was unfortunately very accurate; there are people who really don’t want to try or can’t be a proper mother. As one mother writing on healthtalk.org says “I mean I felt bad enough as it was because I didn’t know how to handle him, but then I thought ‘Well how would I know how to handle him? Babies aren’t born with instruction books and I didn’t know anyone with a child with Asperger 's”(Effect). The article from heathtalk.org shows how Haddon was right about Christopher’s mother; she never truly knew how to take care of him, so she gave up. Christopher’s father would never do anything like that to Christopher because he loves him more than life itself. Christopher’s father wasn’t always a perfect father though… he did lie to Christopher before and it ate him up that Christopher wouldn’t even talk to him anymore."Christopher, look. . . Things can 't go on like this. I don 't know about you, but this. . . this just hurts too much. You being in the house but refusing to talk to me. . . You have to learn to trust me. . . And I don 't care how long it takes. . . If it 's a minute one day and two minutes the next and three minutes the next and it takes years I don 't care. Because this is important. This is more important than anything else"(Haddon 219). Christopher’s father missed him so much, just not talking to …show more content…
If he doesn’t have anyone he will have a meltdown which no one can stop, not even Christopher. In “Diary of a Mom,” a mother of a child similar to Christopher explains,“An autistic meltdown is not a tantrum. One is about control. The other is a loss of control. One is about testing boundaries. The other is not feeling safe. One is an attempt to manipulate. The other is a cry for help”(Untitled). In the novel, Christopher was overwhelmed by the train station and if he had someone with him that could have helped him he would have been fine. Even when the policeman came over to help him, Christopher tells

"Excuse me, sir," said the police officer, "We found your son hundreds of miles away in London with your ex-wife and the homewrecker. " Christopher, a 15-year-old boy in the novel, The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-time written by Mark Haddon, runs away proceeding a string of life changing events such as the stabbing of an innocent pouch. By analyzing the conflict, symbols, motifs, theme, characters of the novel, and looking at the story through the psychoanalytical lens, Christopher’s attempt to run away just may be justifiable. To begin with, the main conflict in The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-time is not being able to trust, more specifically, Christopher trusting his father.…

“And I didn’t open my eyes and I didn’t look at my watch… I had been sitting on the bench for approximately 5 hours”(180). This shows how whenever Christopher detaches his mind for his body, he completely ignores everything that is happening around him and can stay like that for hours. Likewise, when Christopher is talking about detaching his mind at will, he mentions how sometimes it's a bad thing because he does not notice if anyone is trying to talk to him or trying to get his attention. “I don’t notice anything else and Father can be calling me to come eat my supper and I won’t hear him”(73). When Christopher says this, it becomes apparent that he misses a lot sometimes.…

But instead, he did not develop as much which makes him mostly a static character. Christopher’s internal development is restricted and does not grow for the simple reason that he is unable to express his emotions when they grow too strong. When he found out that his mother had an affair with Mr. Shears, he did not get upset or sad because he knew his mother was dead. “I don’t feel sad about it. Because Mother is dead.…

The emoticons disrupt the traditional narrative form therefore serve to critique traditional ways of communication reveal that although Christopher is able to recognise basic emotions such as happy and sad, he cannot recognise more subtle, complex emotions, or their causes. The happy emoticon is used once more when Christopher receives the results of his A-level and emphasises that Christopher is unable to express emotions through actions and words. The effects that this has on his parents can be seen during their fight in Judy Boone’s apartment in the short sentence ‘There were tears dripping down his face’. However, instead of accepting that the man is trying to help Christopher, his reaction is violent even if he doesn’t harm the man ‘So I took out my Swiss Army Knife.’ This shows Christopher’s inability to understand that others may be able to think on their own as he doesn’t understand why someone would come to him on their own. The problem is displayed in chapter 163, ‘when I was little I didn’t understand about other people having minds’, and although he says, ‘I don’t find this difficult now’, it is still evident that he is still struggling with the idea of other people having minds, even if he can cope with the idea better than when he was younger. This shows that having a unique protagonist to follow throughout the story, who isn’t perfect but ultimately human, may be the most…
