Parents were concerned that their children were given too many vaccines too closely together thus causing some children to have learning disabilities and falling on the ASD. Surveys were sent out to parents and 55%-90% of parents stated that their children would receive the recommended vaccinations but not necessarily on the schedule the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends.
Methods & Materials: The case-control study was conducted to see if there was an association between thimerosal-containing injections and ASD. Thimerosal is an antifungal and antiseptic agent used as a preservative for vaccines to keep it from becoming contaminated and to avert the growth of microbes. The study used computerized files, medical charts and telephone interviews and in-person assessments were …show more content…
Each group was given a set amount of cumulative exposure and was documented. The children were also given different amounts of vaccines per day. For example, the last group, birth to age 2, was given a whole-cell pertussis containing vaccine, a typhoid vaccine and other vaccines in a single day resultant in the single-day exposure to antigens. There was not a significant increase to the risk of ASD with the exposure to more antigens. There was also little change when thimerosal was added.
Discussion: From all case studies and control groups there is no link with vaccines being the cause of autism. The concerns that parents had of the amount of vaccines given at a single doctor’s visit had no correlation with autism. This study found that the results were thorough and covered extensive combinations and strengths of antigens with no link leading to
