1. List the primary features of autism.
The primary features of autism are; a) Social Skills: Children or people diagnosed with autism show signs of delayed social development. Many people with autism make very little or no eye contact; show little interest in making or establishing friendships, and few seek out play mates or engage in make believe play. Parents who are intelligent yet rather cold toward their children were referred to as “refrigerator parents”. The parents characteristics created an unfavorable climate for the development of the child and were thought to have developed autism. Autism was believed to have been caused by family dysfunctions and other social stresses. Research failed to support the picturesque view of cold, ridged, rejecting parents, and social and environmental stress factors, so they probably lost their funding to continue their research in this area.
3. What forms of treatment are helpful for a person with autism?
Some studies have shown that early intervention proves beneficial in learning, communication, and social skills. Intervention models may include programs where the child receives structured, therapeutic activities for about 25 hours per week with trained therapists and teachers. Intervention under the supervision of an experienced professional with expertise in autism therapy has been proven effective. Focusing on well-defined learning objectives and the child’s progress in meeting these objectives is regularly evaluated and recorded. Intervention focused on the core areas affected by autism, programs where parents engage in the interventions, helping in decision making, and delivery of treatment. Therapists make it clear that they respect and are clear of the autistic child unique needs, values and perspectives of the child and his or her family.
