Autism is a developmental disorder that impairs the ability to communicate and interact with other people (“Autism,” 2016). The DSM-5 defines autism as a heterogeneous condition with a person who experiences persistent difficulties with social interaction, in a range of contexts, and shows restricted, repetitive behaviors (Hall, Wright, & Mills, 2016). Autism can be associated with a variety of issues such as intellectual disabilities, difficulties in motor coordination, and sleep and gastrointestinal disturbances. However, some people with autism may excel in visual skills, music, math and art (Age, n.d.) The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has estimated that about 1 in 68 children in the United States have autism (known as autism spectrum disorder) (Wiggins et al., 2015). Additionally, there are more than 200,000 cases of autism in the United States each year (“Autism,” 2016). There are several symptoms, causes, and treatments associated with autism.
