In the historical fiction novel, Fever 1793 by Laurie Halse Anderson, the book takes place in Philadelphia during the Yellow Fever outbreak. The book is centered around Mattie, who is a 14-year-old girl who lives with her grandfather and her mother. When the Fever hits the city Mattie and her grandfather flee the city along the way, taking care of each other until he dies, Mattie then starts living with her restaurant cook and taking care of the sick until the fever breaks and the frost comes. The best example that I found in the book of the author using a one person point of view to get the reader’s predicting was with Mattie’s mother. In the book the reader doesn’t know where Mattie’s mother went or what happened to her, this is because the author used a one person point of view. I also noticed that when there is a one person point of view that the reader knows as much as the character in the book because of this, the reader has to predict about what happened to the mother. One theme that I found that while writing my thematic essay was that families can be distant, I saw that this theme was really relevant at the beginning of the book. One metaphor I found in the book was “Life was a battle, and Mother a tired and bitter captain. The captain I had to obey” pg. 17. In this metaphor, Mattie compares her life to a war or a battle, and her mother to a captain who is in the battle. From this metaphor, the reader can infer that Mattie and her mother aren’t close. I think that the author includes this metaphor to really show the reader’s how Mattie’s life
