Since becoming the Senior Social Worker / Acting Caregiver Support Coordinator, I have provided feedback and recommendations that have directly influenced the program’s policies and procedures. For example, when I began working with the program in May 2015, Veterans and their Caregivers had 6 months to appeal the outcome of their assessment for the Comprehensive Assistance for Family Caregivers Programs. Working collaboratively with other program staff, we immediately recognized the length of time needed to be shortened. After agreeing on 45 days to appeal, we discussed these changes with our supervisor, and began implementing this change and communicating it to applicants and program participants. As a result, the appeals are received in a…

On a basis of history and variation discussion and the cost benefit analysis by comparing the policy alternative to the current policy, while legislating a standardized caregiver assessment under the OAA Title III E would definitely lead to benefits for caregivers, care receivers and more importantly, the entire NFCSP system, a range of potential costs and the difficulties to measure their magnitude suggested that it is not the right time for passing this policy reform because the tool could not be created from zero to a national uniform overnight.
