Lupe is a 65-year-old Mexican-American mother of three children. She reported that she grew up in a traditional Mexican household with an authoritative father. She reported that she has five other siblings, was able to graduate high school, and got married at the age of 20. After 15 years of marriage she divorced her husband and did not remarry until the age of 55. After working at various places throughout her life, Lupe retired early to be with her husband. Juan is a 39-year-old Mexican American father of three children. He too grew up in a Mexican household with traditional expectations, however he was raised by his single mother who was the authority figure. He reported that his mother was always supportive. He stated that despite his mother working all the time due to being a single mother, he never felt like she wasn’t available to him. He further reported that when his mother was unavailable, his grandmother was always there to care for him. When describing his mother and grandmother’s parenting style, Juan used terms such as supportive, available, and caring. He further added that despite his family not pushing college on him, they still expected and encouraged him to contribute to society, to be respectful, and to be well behaved. Authoritative parenting style is defined as parents who accurately and quickly respond to their child’s needs as well as being highly demanding yet able to establish a positive emotional climate for their child (Broderick & Blewitt, 2014). Fidelity occurs when a person is able to commit and accept others (Gleitman, Gross, & Reisberg, 2011). Juan demonstrated this ability when he entered into a long-term relationship with his current wife that began at the age of seventeen. He reported that he always felt secure and committed to his wife. He also demonstrated that he successfully transferred his secure attachment to his romantic relationships when he stated he has never found it difficult to open up and become close to romantic partners.
