A Little Pain Goes a Long Way
When it comes down to parenting, one of the most controversial topics is the debate behind the logic of disciplining a child through physical means. Even though the physical act of hurting someone is looked down upon, Murray A. Straus reported in a 2002 study that about 67% of parents used spanking as a means of corporal punishment (Walsh). Along with that, the National Center on Child Abuse and Neglect does not disapprove of corporal punishment, rather, it acknowledges it and “gives passive approval” (Straus & Donnelly). Although many people reject the idea of corporal punishment, viewing it as an unreasonable and inhumane action, they can come to the realization that it is a logical means of discipline, by acknowledging the true underlying meaning of said approach, understanding the proper form, place and time to use corporal punishment, and knowing the limitations and boundaries surrounding the physical discipline.…
