My core values include honesty, fairness, respect, compassion, and happiness. My core values are strongly consistent with my behavior and work ethics. When I work with students, from my Resident Assistants (RAs) to my hall residents, I believe I am engaged in a leadership process whether as a direct or indirect supervisor or as I oversee the residence halls. “Authentic leaders understand their own values and behave toward others based on these values” (Northouse, 2013, pp. 198). I can confidently state that my work reflects my core values from my interactions with students to collaborations with students on projects/events to the need to address policy violations and guiding the student through a reflective educational learning opportunity. My approach with students is one of mutual respect, equality, and authenticity.
In regards to authentic leadership, Bill George’s authentic leadership approach included the characteristic of strong relationships. “Authentic leaders have the capacity to open themselves up and establish a connection with others” (Northouse, 2013, pp 199).
