Auteur theory originated from France as Les politique des auteurs by film critics such as François Truffaut. The auteur theory can be described as director’s personality illustrated in the film, which reoccur throughout several other of their movies by the consistency of themes, genre and cinematic style classifying them as an auteur. An example of highly professional director that can be regarded as an auteur is Martin Scorsese, possessing the features of technical expertise, personality exhibition throughout films creating their signature, and interior meaning as described by Andrew Sarris (Sarris, 1962). All of his movies have complex plots to where long period of over voice narration is conducted explaining the story to the viewers in order to keep them on track. The narrative structure is simple – usually affiliation with Italian mobs or gangs whereby the protagonist becomes excessively wealthy through crimes whereby greed and violence would counter loyalty and trust amongst another, causing a breakdown between multiple characters to a result of arrest. These features can are evident in three of Scorsese’s major films; GoodFellas, Casino and Wolf of Wall Street. The use of violence and over voice narration embedded in his movies provides further evidence proving this statement. The three covers of the movies mentioned give it a vibe of criminal activities, gangs, wealth and drugs. Through the use of dark and half lighting used on the actors it creates a vibe of threat and terror which he has in all of his movies. Also not only the violence and narration is what makes him different is the execution of it. In Scorsese’s films there are multiple usages of technical features through the use of camera movement to characterisation. One of the main attribute seen in all of Scorsese’s films is the use of over voice narration, whereby the story is told rather than shown. In GoodFellas, audience are placed straight into this feature where by “As far as I could remember, I’ve always wanted to be a gangster.” (Henry Hill, 1990) throughout the whole movie Henry narrates his life as a flashback, “his films are like a narrated picture book” (Jamie, 2015).
