Australian television shows, have they been portraying us accurately? Aussies are known to have that “take the piss out of each other” attitude but is it okay to take that attitude and show it to the public through the media? There are a large number of Australian TV shows that inaccurately represent life in a community such as Logan. For example the TV show ‘Housos’, through the use of the characters characteristics, location and scripting (plot and dialogue) they have represented all Australians in suburban life as feckless individuals, low class citizens and uneducated Bogans.

The characters in Housos, they aren’t your everyday Australians who go to the bar after a long day of work, or lounge around their TV after dinner and watch that TV show the whole neighbourhood is up to date with. You can have different types of discourse, Medical discourse, legal discourse etc. The discourse used in Australia is certainly different from what you would hear in America. Housos emphasizes the discourse used in Australia, for example the –azza concept. Characters Sharon and Darren are also known as Shazza and Dazza. The script and dialogue in Housos is overly exaggerated. As Australians we are very expressive and like to speak our mind and when we do, we like to curse, even if we’re happy or angry and characters Housos, do just that. When Shazza is angry, “If you would of had put the fucking right bet on we would of had three grand!” and when she is happy, “Aww fuck, a stripper pole, I fucking love you Dazza.” Yes, some Aussies do curse like a sailor but in Housos, it’s a different story. They have exaggerated the way Aussies speak. This portrays that the people in the community have foul mouths, positioning the audience to view that we’re just uneducated

This resulted in many themes of Australian culture to be influenced by Britain including: sports; foods; fashion; entertainment and music; behaviour and individual attitude about society. Post- WWII the Australian society developed unique characteristics…

With a timeless ability to charm and limitless reach over the population, I Love Lucy retains America’s infatuation in its entertainment value and cultural critique even extending half a century later. With the show’s 1950s setting and outward adherence to some of the patriarchal ideology, contemporary perspectives reveal the unalienable legitimacy to the accusations of it reinforcing patriarchal norms and being degrading to women, although it did encourage bicultural living. But as this is a sitcom and sitcoms aren’t made to recreate our current society, but to fabricate a reality the audience can fall in love with, it carries greater potential to instead view I Love Lucy as a conveyance for Lucille “Lucy” Ball to challenge the post war, prefeminism…

What do Australians stand for? Is it that all Muslims should go back to their home country because they are terrorists? Or that equality is an important part of our country and something that we should strive for? I believe that a reasonable percentage of Americans would agree with the first one but here in Australia we strive for a country with equality. To get equality I believe justice, culture and opportunity are a part of what Australians stand for and a first step to equality, you don’t have to agree with what other people’s beliefs are to get equality but you do need to accept them without judgment.…
