A hybrid between the Australian Shepherd and the Labrador Retriever, the Australian Shepherd Lab is a relatively new breed of medium-sized dog known for exhibiting the intelligence, stamina, and affectionate nature of its purebred parent dogs.

Australian Shepherds are known for their strength, agility, protectiveness, and attentiveness which make it a popular herding and guarding canine. Meanwhile, Labrador Retrievers come from a breed of hunting dogs and has become popular for their kindness, friendliness, and obedience, which makes them the ideal service pets.

With these characteristics, the Australian Shepherd Lab mix is the perfect pet if you are searching for a companion that is both active and calm.

Even light physical exercises are not enough to satiate their inherent active nature. Other than ensuring that they are physically stimulated, they also need mental exercises to constantly train their brain.

Thus, if you are planning on taking on an Australian Shepherd Lab, you need to have sufficient time and energy to bond with your pet through vigorous activities outside. Designing treasure hunts, or teaching him to search for specific objects, will keep your pet busy for several hours. You can create different ways to appease your dog, especially if you will be away for several hours.

As with other breeds, training an Australian Shepherd Lab might also be necessary, especially if you are concerned that their innate herding qualities might show up when they get older. The great news is, both parent dog breeds are highly intelligent and have been proven to be great students for dog training.

At an early age, it would be best to start training them with basic commands, socialization skills, and responsiveness. Through positive reinforcement techniques, not only will you be able to have a pet that knows how to “sit” or “stand”, but you will be rewarded with an affectionate companion that knows how to obey
