This is the stage of dementia where the sufferer becomes extremely frail due to the progression of the chronic and terminal disease. Obviously, each person suffering from dementia will experience different things associated with the illness, but some common symptoms that each person with late stage dementia experiences are as follows. These ideas were put together by the Alzheimer’s society. Just like early stage and middle stage dementia, sufferers will have memory problems. During this stage, the sufferers memory loss is very sever. They will no longer be able to recognize familiar faces, and will lose the ability to recognize their own self in the mirror. The familiar places, such as their kitchen, living room, bedroom, and bathroom are unrecognizable. They get lost in their own home where they used to feel safe and secure in. The sufferer’s communication will be poor. The sufferer loses the abilities to form words and may repeat the same word or cry out. Individuals not only lose the ability to communicate; the ability to move is also lost. The sufferer becomes immobile. Some become confined to a bed or a chair. Some lose lots of weight due to lack of appetite and because of the facts they forget to eat, because they think they remember already eating. What is important for individuals to know who older adults and adults caring for elderly loved ones is to know that symptoms of dementia can be delayed. Delayed in such a way that their loved on can live years and years in early stage dementia with very mild symptoms and die of old age, instead of passing away from late stage dementia. This is possible first by early detection and early intervention. Recognizing signs of dementia and getting the individual checked and diagnosed will help the individual.
