In 1951, for example, the United States and Australia, along with New Zealand, formed the ANZUS treaty, which was a security agreement amongst the trio that was formed to ensure the safety and support of each of the countries. The strategic alliance between the nations has only been called upon once since its inception after the terrorist attacks of September 11th on both the WTC and The Pentagon. Both New Zealand and Australia supported the United States in “Operation Enduring Freedom” providing military units which included naval ships as well as special forces. Since the attacks, The US and Australia have worked together in several countries (Iraq, Afghanistan, etc.) to combat terrorism and violent extremists. They have worked on other counter-terrorism measures world-wide, are committed to controlling and potentially, in the future, eliminating the use of chemical weapons, and are even cooperating on global environmental issues.
