Once the prisoners had been evacuated, SS soldiers destroyed all four crematoria and then made a bonfire out of documents from the prisoner. Then the soldiers burnt the building holding the belongings looted from prisoners about to be gassed. When the Soviets arrived at Auschwitz at the end of January, 1945, the camp was mostly empty. When the SS evacuated Auschwitz, most of the prisoners disappeared without trace after marching to different concentration camps.
