It was located near the town of Oświęcimin southern Poland. It became the administrative center for the whole camp. There were about 16 thousand prisoners. At the end of 1944 Auschwitz prisoners started to destroy the evidence of the death camps(Arnett). Soon the gas chambers and crematoriums were destroyed. Auschwitz death marches began before the end of January during 1945(Arnett). During January in 1945, about 60,000 prisoners had to walk 30 miles and then they would board trains to other concentration camps(History). The Germans destroyed parts of the camps before abandoning them(Memorial and Museum). Most of Auschwitz Ⅰand Ⅱstill remain. The Soviet Army went to Auschwitz on January 27. They found about 7,600 sick prisoners that were left there(Arnett). The Soviet Army also found mountains of corpses and thousands of pieces of clothing, shoes, and seven tons of human hair(Arnett)! About 1.1 million people died or were killed in Auschwitz during World War Ⅱ. After the war many of the people who committed crimes during World War Ⅱhad to go to trial in Poland and West Germany.
