The Aurora Borealis (Northern Lights) along with the aurora australis have always fascinated people, (Northeren Lights or Aurora Borealis Explained) “so much even that some people travel thousands of miles just to see them.” These lights occur when super charged electrons from the solar wind combine with the elements within the Earth’s atmosphere. The electrons will begin to move upward towards the earth’s atmosphere and on their way up they will encounter atoms of oxygen and nitrogen when they get to “20 to 200 miles of altitude.” (Northeren Lights or Aurora Borealis Explained)What is fascinating about the Aurora Borealis is that it’ll turn whichever color, depending on which atom is struck and at which point in altitude they meet.
• Green – oxygen, up to 150 miles in altitude
• Red – oxygen, above 150 miles in altitude
• Blue – nitrogen, up to 60 miles in altitude
• Purple/violet – nitrogen, above 60 miles in altitude

Last year the Crestview FCCLA chapter envisioned a new project. It was a project that seemed appropriate for an organization called Family, Career, and Community Leaders of America; however, I wasn’t thrilled. Mrs. Sawmiller, the FCCLA advisor, devised a plan that acted as a fundraiser, as well as a service opportunity, called Polar Express Night, a one-night babysitting service inspired by the movie, The Polar Express. It was to be a magical evening full of crafts, snacks, pajamas, and Christmas spirit; which I was excited for. My excitement soon subsided; however, upon realizing I was about to spend my Saturday night dealing with sticky, snotty, crying six-year-olds.…

However, the coronal mass ejections (CME) — clouds of protons and other charged particles — that follow the flares within about 20 minutes can disrupt our satellite systems, GPS tracking devices, and power grids. According to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), the September 6 CMEs were powerful enough to black out both high-frequency radio waves and low-frequency communication used in navigation, for about an hour, on the sunlit side of Earth. However, the slight inconvenience is well worth it, given that when the electrically-charged particles enter the earth’s atmosphere and collide with gases like oxygen and nitrogen, they spark auroras. The incredible light shows are typically observed closer to the northern and southern hemisphere poles because the Earth’s magnetic field attracts the particles toward them. However, the recent powerful CMEs lit up the skies across northern latitudes and could be seen all the way from Finland and Scotland in Europe to Kansas and Ohio in the US.The occurrence of the flares just as we are moving into a solar minimum, the quietest period of the sun’s 11-year periodic activity cycle, is causing some concern.…

Full moons can incite a whole host of fears and superstitions, but tomorrow's full moon will have one real effect: It will bring with it high tides that could exacerbate the impending blizzard. The moon is expected to be full tomorrow (Jan. 23) at 8:46 p.m. ET, according to NASA, resulting in higher-than-normal coastal tides. These conditions, combined with winds gusting at 40 to 50 miles per hour (64 to 80 km/h) from this weekend's winter storm (dubbed Jonas), could cause some coastal flooding.…
