Auntie Saundra

Everybody knows her. Everybody does. That one aunt who is so annoying that walking into the room she is in seems more like a mission than a normal situation. “Oh hey little Henry!” she would always squeal to me. I can’t stand the sound of her voice, the whining just sends ice bullets down my spine. “Hi Auntie Saundra” I would say back, trying to disguise my distinct look of disgust that I had quickly painted on my face upon entering the room. Auntie Saundra is my great aunt on my mother’s side and is a very sweet lady. Nevertheless, she is a sneaky person and lived on a hush-hush, don’t ask and don’t tell philosophy when it came to situations that involved her but somehow managed to tell everyone about something that didn’t involve her. This was the first time I had been to California or anywhere on the west coast of the U.S and I must say it was an interesting trip. The phone calls were never-ending. “How far away are y’all baby?” my grandmother would ask as if she was in a hurry of some sort. “Well we’ve just made it to New Mexico grandma. Is everything okay?” “Oh yes, yes indeed everything is fine, I’m just ready to see my grandbabies!” I could tell from her voice that she really missed me and my sister Johanna; she kept calling the entire drive just to see where we were. The ride had become especially quiet as we grew closer and closer to the California state line. Nothing but faint music from the 80s filled the car. “I’m really in the mood for a payday right now” Johanna said so randomly. “Hey Unc, can you stop at the next gas station?” she blurted out. “Yes baby girl, I have to drain the main vein myself” he …show more content…
When we pulled up to the Chevron everyone got out the car to stretch, use the bathroom, etc. I had never seen Johanna get so excited about a candy bar in my entire life. She had gotten her wallet and jetted in the store so fast I didn’t even see her. But, when she came out, she had the biggest look of

This movie is the rare mix between animation and real action film. It is not a movie in which the animation and characters interact with each other, but there is a balance between both genres. It is a coming of age story and how the lives of teenagers can be affected by simple events in their ordinary life. In the Seventies, the fifteen years old troublemaker and leader altar boy Tim Sullivan and his three great friends, Francis Doyle, Wade Scalisi and Joey Anderson, study in a repressive Catholic school, and they hate their nun-teacher Sister Assumpta. Ruth May Price is the most genuine and honest family member, due to her young age and inability to interpret her surrounds for anything other than their literal meaning. She offers a refreshing vibe of innocence that the other characters do not. She also shows a sense of caring and forgiveness towards her family that the other characters fail to show, emphasizing her disconnect from the drama that the rest of the family was burdened with. • Authors Style and…

The Glass Castle by Jeannette Walls is the kind of universal story that every single person can relate to in certain ways. You can either relate to the struggles of having an alcoholic parents, or draw similarities to parents who are absent from day to day life for one reason or another. You may even be able to relate to the way that Jeanette was bullied just because she looked and lived different than others. In her story, Jeannette not only shows the hardships that she had growing up with an alcoholic father and an off-the-line mother, but she shows how her and her sibling all dealt with this upbringing, and how all of them ended up differently because of the way they were raised. We watch them all finally understand that the way they were…

Being in a biracial family is something I had never expected to happen. Growing up in a stereotypical Asian family, I was always taught to be conservative in our behavior, never be out walking alone, and to be cautious of the poor, Black homeless people who are often hanging around the slummy alleyways of downtown Los Angeles eying random passersby with either a gloomy, defeated look in their eyes or a hard, uncomfortable stare. As a result, I grew up to become a very cautious and reserved family girl. I rarely went out with friends and usually felt content with settling in my warm, serene home. The thought of becoming friends from outside my comfort zone was never something I expected nonetheless becoming family with a whole different race never crossed my mind until the one day…

“Never take things for granted” Feelings of oppression, fear, and distress were present in her old life. Nobody likes being under the control of a dictator. At the time Castro was in control of Cuba, so nobody was allowed to leave the country. It was late in the afternoon, roughly five o’clock; my great-grandfather came home from work, as a surgeon, with some frightening news.…

The day seemed to drag on and on, as I waited, counting down the days to California. It was a humid, sunny afternoon down at the Alton pool, where I usually spend most of my summer days working as a lifeguard. Today was very different than most…. And maybe the reason why was because it was my last day of work before I flew off to the big L.A. Most days at the pool the time went by slower than any I have ever known, with the scorching hot sun burning my skin, and little kids yelling at their friends telling each other secrets or what they want to play next.…

Thus I am subjugated to being her nephew and someone who is perhaps less mature. This relational dominance is established may times through our email exchange by her use of short abrupt sentences that are very direct and interrogatory questions that question my sincerity through implicatures. Examples of this relational dominance can be found in my aunts second email when she says, “is it because you have another smart phone that’s not an IPhone?” and in her last email “I’ve got Laney, Does she have and IPhone?” Although these few quotes may seem to be legitimate questions, knowing the individual my aunt is, there was most likely a bit of sarcasm behind those remarks.…
