Aumakua Personal Statement

Personal statement Living in Hawai’i is a unique, amazing, and unbelievable experience, especially because it allows me to connect to my ancestors. My father and I have a tradition of paddling over the summer and it is my way of connecting to my culture. We have a long history of paddling together, usually on Sunday mornings, and it is my version of church. Everytime I paddle it puts me in a happy place. Paddling has made me a stronger person and has shaped me into who I am today.
I started paddling at a very young age and from my first stroke in the water, I instantly fell in love. Paddling puts me in a deep connection with my ancestors and it gives me an idea of how they got traveled to the different islands. Also paddling puts me in my happy place, no matter what mood i'm in before I get in the water it changes as soon as I get in the water.
Paddling has taught me how to show pride. I show pride of my hawaiian culture because paddling was a way of life for the ancient hawaiians and by me paddling it shows my respect for the culture and how valuable it is to me.

In Hawai’i we have aumakua’s (Family god), my aumakua is the mano( Shark). I also feel like it is my protector when i’m in the water because of an incident in 2012. My dad went out for a paddle and he saw a shadow, he then flipped and had to swim about 100 yards to cliffs. He got bumped by a 12 foot shark but wasn’t harmed. Although this didn’t happen to me it brought me to a realization that my aumakua is our protector. Being that my aumakua is a shark it makes me respect the ocean even more. One way I respect the ocean is by doing beach clean-ups to help the amount of trash entering the ocean. Although me doing beach clean-ups doesn’t desolate the problem it helps a little more every time I do

Since my freshman year of high school, my passion for agriculture has flourished. I did not come from an agricultural background as my parents worked for the State and Amtrak, but I was intrigued about California’s leading industry. Up until my freshman year in high school, the closest I had gotten to agriculture was when I would grow a garden of vegetables during the spring for fresh produce. I became involved in my school’s FFA chapter and was infatuated with the FFA from the start. I saw it as a way to become involved as well as to expand my leadership and social skills.…

The Lesson in Quitting For the past 7 years of my life, swimming has played a huge role. Growing up, I had always enjoyed being in the water, and was one of the odd kids that genuinely enjoyed swimming lessons, no bribes required (thinking about it, I wish I had some of those kids in the lessons I teach now). Overtime, it began to feel less like a passion and more like an obligation; something I had committed to that was too late to stop. I was afraid to quit, afraid to disappoint, and trying to be dedicated to a sport I had lost interest in made me start to hate it. This year, I finally decided to drop the sport, and am now embracing the huge change it has had in my life.…
