It then flashes back to present day with Hazel Grace sitting on a hospital bed. From the beginning, the audience can see how much of an impact Augustus Waters had on Hazel’s outlook on life. When the film foreshadows at the beginning, it shows Hazel smiling with a positive outlook on life. Then, it flashes back to present day Hazel, who is very negative and is convinced that she is a ticking time bomb that will die and destroy everyone she was ever close to. It is very important to have an appealing start to a film. Otherwise, you have lost the audience before the movie even begins. The Fault In Our Stars does a superb job at keeping audiences engaged from the beginning. From here, the storyline only gets more interesting. With stars like this, audiences had high expectations for this film, and it did not disappoint. Shailene Woodley plays the part of Hazel Grace Lancaster and she is perfect for the role. Woodley is very convincing and makes audiences believe that she really does have cancer and is really falling hard for Elgort. She has audiences laughing and crying along with her throughout the entire film. Ansel Elgort plays the part of Augustus Waters or “Gus” and is absolutely ideal for this role. Gus is an awkward teenage boy who is sick and is falling in love. Elgort portrays this perfectly. The way he looks at Hazel Grace makes audiences believe he has never seen a more beautiful girl in the world. Other actors that stand out are Laura Dern, who plays Hazel’s mother, and Willem Dafoe, who plays Peter Van Houten, the author of Hazel’s favorite book. Dern acts as a concerned mother of a young girl with cancer and makes you believe every single moment. While Dafoe acts as an emotionless, cold-hearted author. The audience grows to loathe the reclusive man and he plays the part
