The play, “Fences”, written by August Wilson tells the story of a tragic hero by the name of Troy Maxson. Troy is portrayed as a hard-working African American man, driven to provide for his family. Wilson writes in a way, though, that makes the audience feel that Troy does this more out of a sense of duty to his family, than for any other reason. Troy grew up a hero in a sense and experienced what it means to be truly great at something. He was a gifted athlete, specifically in the game of baseball.…

In the play Fences by August Wilson, baseball represents racism, failure, and doubt in the eyes of the main character, Troy Maxson. For Troy, the memories involving baseball are not particularly fond. Baseball changed him permanently, holding him back from who he could’ve been. It affected him in who he became as a husband and father, and how he dealt with situations in his life. Although Troy has some redeeming qualities, baseball was not an influence on them.…

In the article he describes how the modern tragic hero is a “clash between the character and the environment…” (Longman 532). In Fences Wilson introduces his spin on the modern tragic hero through Troy Maxson, a (53) year old African American man who was a former baseball star in the “Negro Baseball League”. Troy is a complex character; he seems content in the beginning, but as the play goes on his personal conflicts become more evident.…

It also allowed for group identity and it helped organize cultures. Wilson felt that African Americans had a unfair advantage when it came to play writing and the freedom to live as the whites did. I would ponder day in and night out about what the consequences of my family’s dysfunctionality would bring me, But it was not until the second semester of English in tenth grade that I would read the play Fences by August Wilson, in which the characters Corey and his father Troy do not have the best father son relationship, which was relatable, giving insight and belief that there was any actual hope for me, before then I would think that the cycle of chaos that somehow seems to be a genetic feature throughout our family’s history would either live on through me, harming the ones nearest and dearest to me, or die when I would inevitably kick the…

While introducing the characters, the play did a splendid job at giving us an amazing description and a well detailed background of each character with the biography paragraphs that the play provided. However, the descriptions offered does not necessarily give us information about their personality. The personality of a character is important to the audience because the personality of a character is a dependent variable of the audience in reference if the audience likes that character or not. Therefore, the play does a brilliant job at describing the characters, their backgrounds, and history, but the movie offered us more of the character’s personality than that of the…
