Auggie Pullman

Ever wake up in the morning with a pimple on your face? You might feel absolutely mortified and try to cover it up with the best kind of make up the world has to offer. Why do we feel like we need to do that? Is it because we care about how we look? Want to make a good impression? Or you just can’t bear the thought of having people look at you in a negative way? Unlike a small pimple Auggie Pullman from wonder by R.J. Palacio has a cleft palate. As he grows older he begins school in 5th grade and the children in his grade aren’t always so accepting. He only has three people he met before school and at lunch finds himself alone being pointed out and laughed at by the school. He becomes friends with Summer and Jack and builds a close friendship with a few rocky points. Throughout the story Auggie grows more comfortable with himself and feels happy. Via describes her family to be like outer space “August is the Sun. [Via] and Mom and Dad are planets orbiting the Sun. The rest of our family and friends are asteroids and comets floating around the planets orbiting the Sun.” She’s also struggling with her own coming of age and identity issues. While some have to do with Auggie and his role in her life, others have to do with her friendships at school and figuring out the right relationship between her home life and her school life—all of which is pretty typical growing-up
