Auggie visits Beecher Prep and meets the principal, Mr. Tushman, along with three other students: Jack Will, Julian Albans, and Charlotte Cody. Although extremely self-conscious and scared of being around kids, Auggie gradually gets used to and even begins to enjoy school. He befriends Jack as well as a girl named Summer Dawson, who sits with him during lunch when no one else would. However, Julian barely hides his disgust at Auggie's appearance. Julian avoids him and often makes hurtful remarks. He bullies Auggie and hates him for the way he looks.
During Halloween, when Auggie doesn't feel like wearing his Boba Fett costume because he didn't want to make his father even more late for work, he wears a "Bleeding Scream" costume. Instead, a robe with a mask that has fake blood oozing out. Unrecognized, he walks around school knowing he would not get bullied with his face is covered by the mask. When he reaches homeroom, he overhears Jack telling Julian he would "kill himself" if he looked like Auggie. Auggie decides to quit school, but his older sister Via convinces him not to. Auggie confides the incident to Summer, and making her promise

Auggie and Jack write less offensive ones back in defense, though Auggie and Jack's notes aren't mean like Julian's. They are humorous notes from a made-up girl named Beulah. Things began to change during a class overnight Nature Reserve camping trip when Auggie and Jack were attacked by seventh-grade students from another school who bullied Auggie. Not only does Jack defend Auggie, but other classmates: Miles Noury, Henry Joplin, and Amos Conti come to his defense and befriend him.
